NBPL's Summer Reading Program
Participants in our children’s summer reading program will be filled with excitement as they embark on the journey of reading this summer.
The younger readers in this program can enjoy the beauty of reading by listening to stories being read to them, while independent readers can practice their reading skills and develop a deep love of literature all on their own. Younger children are encouraged to read (or have read to them) age-appropriate books while older children have the option of reading 15 books or 15 chapters. Children are not limited to reading library materials during the course of the program, and are strongly encouraged to read what they love (books, graphic novels, etc.), track their own reading progress, and reap the benefits of an instilled love of reading with the encouragement and support of parents and library staff.
Children will receive a special game sheet to keep track of books or chapters finished. After every 5 books/chapters read to them or read on their own, children will be awarded a special prize. The final prize, after meeting the goal of 15 books/chapters, is the choice of an age-appropriate book and the entry into a grand prize drawing.
Upon completion of the program, children with a real appetite for books may choose to keep reading to earn up to two additional entries into the grand prize drawing.
Reading brings rewards in our Teen Summer Reading Program. For every book read, participants have the opportunity to write a review which is then their entry for the weekly prize drawing. The more books read and reviewed, the more chances teens have to win great prizes like gift cards to local shops, restaurants, movie theaters, and book stores.
After submission of their first five (5) reviews, participants win a shiny new paperback book. All review entries submitted by participating readers will be placed into the Grand Prize drawing for the chance of to win a pair of Disneyland tickets.

Adults can join in the fun by taking part in their very own library reading program this summer, too. Each participant will sign up at the library branch of their choice, read away their summer, and be awarded a paperback book upon the submission of 5 reviews.
Ultimately, for the submission of only 2 reviews, participants will then be entered into a grand prize drawing. One winner will be selected from entries from each library branch, which means that four lucky winners will receive a goody bag from the Newport Beach Library Foundation as well as tickets to a Newport Theatre Arts production.
All adult program participants will be welcomed to join fellow readers for an end of the summer wrap-up reception, with refreshments and prize drawings, at the Central Library on Thursday, August 8, from 2-4pm.
