NBPL's Summer Reading Program
Landing Promo 3 across
The Children’s Summer Reading Program will run from June 21 to August 8 with the theme “Paws to Read.” Special programs, featuring lots of animal-themed crafts and entertainment will be held regularly on Mondays at the Crean Mariners Branch Library, 1300 Irvine Avenue; Tuesdays at the Central Library, 1000 Avocado Avenue; and Thursdays at both the Corona del Mar Branch Library, 420 Marigold Avenue, and the Balboa Branch Library, 100 E. Balboa Blvd.
The younger readers in this program can enjoy the beauty of reading by listening to stories being read to them, while independent readers can practice their reading skills and develop a deep love of literature all on their own. Children are not limited to reading library materials during the course of the program, and are strongly encouraged to read what they love (books, graphic novels, etc.), track their own reading progress, and reap the benefits of an instilled love of reading with the encouragement and support of parents and library staff.
Join the club by picking up a Summer Reading Program gamesheet at any Newport Beach Public Library location (or by downloading one here) to keep track of reading time. On the gamesheet, the reader will select one side of the gamesheet to complete: either the Reading Club, for independent readers, or the Read-to-Me Club, for young not-yet-readers or those reading with help. The Reading Club awards a special prize to independent readers after every five (5) 20-minute sessions of reading. The Read-to-Me Club awards prizes to young readers after every five (5) activities completed. Once the entire gamesheet is completed, the independent and young readers will win a new book and be entered into the Grand Prize drawing. As a bonus, children can enter weekly drawings at their local branch by filling out book reviews!
Upon completion of the program, children who pawsitively love books may choose to keep reading and enter weekly drawings by filling out book review forms.
Reading brings rewards in our Teen Summer Reading Program. For every book read, participants have the opportunity to write a review and enter the weekly prize drawing. The more books read and reviewed, the more chances teens have to win great prizes like gift cards to local shops, restaurants, movie theaters, and book stores.
After submission of their first three (3) reviews, participants win a new paperback book. All review entries submitted by participating readers will be placed into the Grand Prize drawing.
Keep checking back at our website for new and fun ways to participate in the Library’s Summer Reading Programs!
Adults can join in the fun by taking part in their very own library reading program this summer, too! Each participant will sign up at the library branch of their choice and read away their summer. Participants can read and review print books, downloadable materials and audiobooks. After submission of three (3) reviews, participants are eligible for the Grand Prize drawing and will be awarded a paperback book.
All adult program participants will be welcomed to join fellow readers for an end of the summer wrap-up reception, with refreshments and prize drawings, at the Central Library on Thursday, August 7, from 2-4pm.
