The staff of the Newport Beach Public Library system invites you to "Dream Big" and take part in our celebration for the love of reading and libraries all summer long.

The Summer Reading Program is open to Babies, Children, Teens and Adults!

Babies Program (Children ages 0-2)

With the baby program for children ages 0-2, our youngest library users can participate in the excitement of summer reading fun. Children and parents will actively engage in activities that promote learning, literacy, and a love for the library.

From a list of specific activities, such as singing the ABC’s or attending a library story time, parents of babies will select a total of 14 activities to perform with their little ones during the summer. After the first 7 activities are completed, babies will be awarded a prize.

The final completion of all 14 activities awards each participant a final prize of an age-appropriate board book. Additionally, upon completion of the program, each child will receive a certificate, and will be entered into a grand prize drawing.

Kids Program (Children ages 3-12)

Participants in our regular summer reading program, children ages 3-12 (preschoolers through 6th grade), will be filled with excitement as they embark on the journey of completing 10 hours of reading for the summer.

The younger readers in this program can enjoy the beauty of reading by listening to stories being read to them, while independent readers can practice their reading skills and develop a deep love of literature all on their own. Children are not limited to just reading library materials during the course of the program,  and are strongly encouraged to read whatever they love(books, graphic novels, magazines, newspapers, etc.), track their own reading progress, and reap the benefits of an instilled love of reading with the encouragement and support of parents and library staff.

Upon initial registration for the program, each child will receive a special game sheet to keep track of the total hours read. After every 2 hours of either being read to or reading on their own, children will be awarded a special prize. The final prize, after meeting the goal of reading 10 hours, is the choice of an age-appropriate book, a certificate of completion, and the entry into a grand prize drawing.

Teen Program (7th-12th grades)

Reading brings rewards in our Young Adult summer reading program. For every book read, teens will have the opportunity to write a review for entrance into a weekly prize drawing. The more books that are read and reviewed, the more chances teens will have at winning great prizes, like gift cards to local shops, restaurants, movie theaters, and book stores.

Just for signing up, participants will receive a cool pencil labeled with this year’s theme of “Dream Big,” which can be used to write interesting and catchy reviews that will be displayed in our libraries’ teen areas.  After the submission of 5 reviews, teens will then be able to collect a young adult book of their choice.

All review entries submitted by participating teens will be placed into the grand prize drawing with the chance of winning a first place prize of two tickets to Disneyland, or a second place prize of an iPod shuffle.

Adult Program

Adults can join in the fun by taking part in their very own library reading program this summer, too. Each participant will sign up at the library branch of their choice, read away their summer, and be awarded a paperback book upon the submission of 5 reviews.

Ultimately, for the submission of only 2 reviews, participants will then be entered into a grand prize drawing. One winner will be selected from entries from each library branch, which means that four lucky winners will receive a grand prize pair of tickets to an excitingly educational NBPL Foundation Library Live event and a pair of tickets to a culturally entertaining Newport Theatre Arts Center play.

All adult program participants will be welcomed to join fellow readers for an end of the summer wrap-up reception, with refreshments and prize drawings, at the Mariners Branch Library on August 9th from 2 to 4 PM.
